Relations between the Republic of Uzbekistan and Portugal
Cooperation in political sphere
Portugal was among the first Western countries, which recognized the independence of Uzbekistan (January 16, 1992). Diplomatic relations between Uzbekistan and Portugal was established on August 12, 1992.
Visit of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov to the Portuguese Republic in December 1996, when he held meetings with President J.Sampaio and Prime Minister A.Guterres, laid a beginning of political dialogue between the leaders of two countries.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal J.Gama visited Uzbekistan in September 2001, and held meetings with Prime-Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Chairman of Oliy Majlis and Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal A.M.da Cruz visited Uzbekistan in October 2002 as acting chairman of OCSE.
Portuguese Minister of State and for Foreign Affairs L.Amado paid a visit to Uzbekistan on April 15-16, 2009 and held meetings with Prime-Minister of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investment and Trade.
The first round of political consultations on the level of deputies of Foreign ministers was held in Lisbon in January 2009.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal J.Cravinho visited Uzbekistan on 8 April 2010, when the regular round of political consultations between the Ministries of foreign Affairs took place. It was organized the bilateral meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, Investment and Trade, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where the issues of further development of bilateral relations were discussed, exchange of views on topical international and regional issues took place.
Cooperation in trade and economic sphere
The most-favored-nation status in mutual trade was established between two countries in accordance with the on Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between Uzbekistan and the European Union (1996).
Trade between Uzbekistan and Portugal
The presentation of the economic and tourist potential of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the participation of the delegation of Uzbekistan headed by Sh.Tulyaganov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade was held in Lisbon on September 23, 2009.
The Portuguese side was represented by the heads of big companies and organizations, such as «EDP», «Galp Energia», «Enoforum», «Transitex», «Grapo Azevedos», as well as representatives of the Ministry of Economy and Innovation of Portugal and Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
Memorandums of Understanding between: a) Agency “Uzinfoinvest” and the AICEP Portugal Global – Trade & Investment Agency; b) Agency “Uzinfoinvest” and Portuguese Industrial Association; c) “Uzbekneftegaz” and «Partex Services Corporation» company were signed during the event.
Delegation of the Ministry of Health and pharmaceutical companies of Portugal, headed by Mr. M.Teixeira, State Secretary of the Ministry of Health, paid a working visit to Uzbekistan on May 27-29, 2015.
It were organized bilateral meetings at the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade, State Joint Stock Concern of pharmaceutical industry of Uzbekistan “Uzpharmsanoat”, where the issues of bilateral cooperation in the health and pharmaceutical industries were discussed.
Cooperation in cultural-humanitarian spheres
Cooperation in the cultural sphere is an important direction of bilateral relations. In the framework of development of cooperation in this sphere, artists from Uzbekistan took part at the international festival of classical music “Evora East” in city of Evora (Portugal) in July 2008
The Delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan with the assistance of the Turismo de Portugal took part at the 2nd International Conference on “Best practices in research in the field of tourism and management of green tourism”, which took place in October 2009 in Estoril (Portugal).
The drawing of schoolchildren from city of Porto took part in the V Tashkent International Biennale of children’s drawings “Joys of Tashkent”, which was held from 22 to 26 December 2014 at the Palace Youth Creativity in Tashkent.
